Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuges
Tulelake,
California
Photographer’s Mecca at Tule Lake, CA
If bird photography is your game, the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge in
northeast California should
be at the top of your list for places to see. And, thanks to a $23,500 grant
from the Pathways To Nature® Conservation Fund, you might find yourself nose
to beak with a White Pelican, or Clark’s Grebe, or any of dozens of other
species found on Tule Lake.
With
the Pathways funding, Refuge staff built a photography blind at the end of a
700’ long, handicap accessible trail. The blind puts photographers and
birders at the edge of a sandbar in Tule Lake, which is surrounded by
cattails and bulrushes. Sometimes birds approach as close as 20’ to 25’,
providing full frame images. Waterfowl, shorebirds, herons, egrets, and
rails are just a few of the species you might encounter.
To help ensure undisturbed viewing, the Refuge requires reservations for
early morning photo safaris. Birders and nature lovers are also welcome to
come and enjoy this unique opportunity to join the birds in their wetlands
haunts. So grab your camera and binoculars and head west … the birds of Tule
Lake await you.
