San Bernardino National Forest
Big Bear Discovery Center
San Bernardino, CA
California
Dreaming
When L.A’s movie stars want to see Bald Eagles,
they make the short trek to the San Bernardino National Forest. This forest,
perched near the area’s large urban population, hosts the largest
concentration of wintering Bald Eagles in Southern California.
Now, thanks to Wild Birds Unlimited and its
customers, and a $17,400 grant through the Pathways To Nature Program,
learning about the eagles and the Forest’s other wildlife is easier than
ever at the Big Bear Discovery Center at Big Bear lake. During the winter
months, you’ll be greeted by a life-size, life-like eagle that looks like
it’s about to soar right past you. Scan the educational information that is
part of the exhibit, and you’ll be ready to head into the field.
Don’t think that eagles are all that you will
see. This National Forest’s diverse habitats span elevations from 2,000’ to
11,500’. You can hike miles of trails, soaking in the blue skies, clean air,
and more than 440 species of wildlife that have been recorded here. White
Pelicans, Wood Ducks, and large numbers of other types of waterfowl are sure
to keep you entertained.
As you are hiking the trails, keep a sharp eye
out for L.A’s glitterati. You never know who might be behind those dark
glasses!
